We’ve Finished!

We finished at 13:00 Saturday 14 August.

The last day wasn't as easy as we thought it would be so just as well it was a short one.

It hasn't really sunk in what we've just accomplished but I'm sure it will. Legs are hurting as expected so I'll be sure to lie down as much as possible this week.

This trip has been fantastic. Yes it's been hard but it's not all been about the cycling either. We've met some brilliant, friendly, funny and wacky people along the way and I've loved every minute.

I'd like to give a personal special thanks to Howard. He's been brilliant, from an organization point to just being a top bloke. I dred to think how the trip would have gone without his support. If anyone out there is thinking of doing lejog I highly reccommend Howard Oates for a support vehicle.

Day 13 Inverness – Helmsdale

It was a cold start this morning in the church hall but the sun was shining so we knew it would warm up. We got into our morning routine of staying in bed for an extra 10 minutes while Howard made our sandwiches and a pot of tea then we get up for weetabix.

It wasn't far to our starting point and we were back on the road in sunny weather for the first time in about 4 days.

Cromarty Firth crossing

From early on we had a really quick pace, we didn't have much of a tailwind helping us but the road was good. We did have to stop every 10 minutes for Luke to sort-himself-out but by half past one we had done 60 miles!

Day 12 Spean Bridge – Dingwall

It was still raining this morning when we woke up so straight away we felt a bit 'ugh' we don't want it to be too easy though do we?

Drove up to Spean Bridge where we left off and got going. I hate having wet feet.

Today we were still on the A82 all the way up to Inverness where we would take the A9. We had to pull over quite a bit today to let cars and buses etc. pass, the roads were busy because we passed Loch Ness and we saw lots of travellers from all over.

Day 11 Ardlui – Spean Bridge

Within five minutes of setting off today we were as wet as we were when we finished yesterday. This got me down but I could only laugh at the situation.
We were following the A82 all the way up to Spean Bridge so there would be very little chance of getting lost. Before long we reached the highlands and despite the very poor visibilty there were some excellent views of the mountains and this road must be one of the best in Britain to drive down. You feel incrediy small with these huge, imposing mountains all around you and they just got bigger after every horizon.
We had a few climbs and the rain never let up for long and the wind kept returning, always against us.

Day 10 Cumnock – Ardlui

Wet. Very very wet.

Today was the furthest single ride we've done and it rained the whole time!

We started out well, passing the Robert Burns memorial and getting a photo and as you can see, we're already soaked.

Burns Memorial

We missed a b road that would have taken us up around Glasgow so ended up carrying on through Barrhead (which is where we stayed last night) then through Paisley which has some of the worst roads we've been on so far. After another wrong turn (bad signage) we got onto the A82 which goes all the way upto and past loch Lomond.

Day 9 Gretna – Cumnock

So we set off from Gretna this morning (Monday which means the blog is up to date, yay). Straight away we were against the wind, this isn't nice. It really makes a difference and it's suprising how much more you have to push.

The A75, not that exciting tbh

Day 8 Kendal – Gretna

We both felt tired this morning leaving Kendal but, there's no time for slacking we had the lake district to cross. We follwed the A6 which runs parallel to the M6. It was a hard slog to get the highest point - only 1400ft and after that we were treated to a fantastic long downhill and a fast flat where we covered a lot of ground in good time. Wooo.
